VAT questions for the United Kingdom
What is the standard VAT rate in the United Kingdom?
20%. Reduced and zero rates also apply to particular goods and services, and they are listed in the table above — pick one of the slabs, or type the rate your invoice uses.
How do I take VAT back out of a total?
Divide by 1 plus the rate rather than multiplying by it. At 20%, a total divided by 1 plus 20% gives the amount before tax, and the difference is the tax. Choose "Remove tax" and this is done for you.
Do I have to register for VAT?
Registration usually becomes compulsory above a turnover threshold, which is shown in the table above where one applies. Thresholds have conditions and exceptions, so confirm your position with the United Kingdom's tax authority or your accountant.
